Creating a Stress Free Violence Free Society
The American Institute of Stress reports that 'Stress' is the number 1 health problem that the United States faces, and that stress levels have escalated in adults, children, teenagers, and the elderly alike. What makes this issue more alarming is that, according to several studies, individual stress is the key cause of violence in society.

From June 6th to 10th, 2008, more than 120 cities across the United States will join hands to combat this vicious cycle of stress and violence through the 'Stress Free Violence Free Society' campaign

This historic venture is being spearheaded by volunteers of the Art of Living Foundation and will feature the Art of Living Course, a program that has changed more than 25 million lives in 140 countries. Participants of this course will learn unique breathing techniques designed to reduce individual stress and, consequently, decrease violence and increase human values in society.

Sudarshan Kriya: The cornerstone of the Art of Living course is a rhythmic breathing technique called the "Sudarshan Kriya®", developed in 1981 by Art of Living Founder His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The technique is based on the yogic principle that the breath possesses specific rhythms which can be used to naturally detoxify and energize the body. Independent studies of the Sudarshan Kriya have demonstrated its ability to lower cortisol (the "stress hormone") and cholesterol, and to provide relief from depression and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder such as insomnia, fear, anxiety and grief.

Wisdom From Sri Sri
"What I would suggest is to take one week off every year for yourself, like you take your car for servicing. During that time, align yourself with nature, wake up with the sunrise, do some exercise, eat proper food, just as much food as necessary, some yoga, and some breathing exercises, a few minutes of singing, and keeping silence, enjoying the creation. Aligning ourselves with nature, our whole system gets recharged, it makes the whole year. We feel so vibrant and enthusiastic." -- His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
